The team has returned from Peru safe and sound! After wrapping things up at the hospital and discussing future missions with the leadership we flew from Trujillo to Lima. We spent Saturday getting to know more about Peruvian culture in the capital - including a visit to the Lima Art Museum and watching a dance performance before heading to the airport for our overnight flight. As we go back to our home life we are thankful for this opportunity to participate in a mission with such a wonderful group of people as well as for all the support we received from those back home!

On March 18th NJMS’s ISHI club presented and International Hernia Day event to raise awareness about the surgical burden of hernias in underdeveloped nations and to instruct 1st and 2nd year students on their repair. The night began with lectures by Dr. Gerard Baltazar, Trauma Critical Care Fellow, and Dr. Advaith Bongu, surgery resident before breaking into small groups led by surgery residents to learn how to tie surgical knots and suture. At the end of the night, students left with a new understanding of hernias and the particular challenges that they pose in underdeveloped countries, as well as new surgical knot-tying and suturing skills!

ISHI students Christine and Chris represented ISHI at the Liberty Science Center at the Health Across Borders Science Fair today! Sponsored by the Rutgers Centers for Global Advancement and International Affairs, the ISHI booth gave kids a chance to try their hand at repairing a hernia! Our kid surgeons were pretty good at the task, concentrating and making sure to get a meticulous repair! Thanks Christine and Chris for setting up the booth and getting kids interested in surgery!
