On March 18th NJMS’s ISHI club presented and International Hernia Day event to raise awareness about the surgical burden of hernias in underdeveloped nations and to instruct 1st and 2nd year students on their repair. The night began with lectures by Dr. Gerard Baltazar, Trauma Critical Care Fellow, and Dr. Advaith Bongu, surgery resident before breaking into small groups led by surgery residents to learn how to tie surgical knots and suture. At the end of the night, students left with a new understanding of hernias and the particular challenges that they pose in underdeveloped countries, as well as new surgical knot-tying and suturing skills!
